The backdrop wins the contracts

The office is a cellar in the south west of England. The ceiling sits low, and the owner says it is just right for a hobbit like him. He built the room over five years and filled it over fifteen, a bit at a time, so none of it was bought at once.

The frame is powder coated slotted angle iron and aluminium extrusion, with beech blockwood kitchen counters laid on top. The server rails came out of a full height cabinet that somebody was throwing away at an old job. All four went onto the tube, out of town on the train, and then onto the frame with M10 bolts.

Two machines do the work in the rack. The ProLiant runs GitLab, two Postgres databases, Redis, MinIO, the build runners and the embedding models on a pair of V100s. A workstation behind it holds a 5090 for the larger models, so the agents in VSCodium answer here and not through a cloud provider. Two dead one unit servers sit under the ProLiant, still waiting to be thrown out.

The room is mostly off the grid. There is twenty-four kilowatts of generation on the roof and two ten kilowatt batteries under it. Everything here draws five to six hundred watts on a normal day, and about two kilowatts with the laser and every machine at full tilt. An extractor runs almost around the clock and the air conditioning vents straight outside, because this is radon country.

It is almost silent while it idles. The chair is small and plain and stays that way: lumbar support and wheels, and nothing more. A Mario Kart 64 cartridge is zip tied to the wall. The next job is a tileable LED matrix for the walls behind, so the room can pretend it stands on the fiftieth floor of a night city.
