The posters come from the parks

The room sits in a corner of the house, under a sloping ceiling. The wall on the left carries the national parks: Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Joshua Tree, Yosemite, Arches and Acadia, each one in a black frame. The posters came from the gift shops at the parks themselves, and there is room on the wall for the parks still to come.

The black board below them is a copy of the Ikea Skadis, bought from Amazon because the nearest Ikea is two and a half hours away. Almost every holder on it was printed here: the cradle for the 8BitDo, the cradle for the DualSense, the stand that keeps the MacBook Pro on its edge. The board first went up on adhesive pads and nails, and the adhesive held so well that taking it off pulled the drywall with it. It now hangs on screws and printed standoffs.

A 34 inch BenQ ultrawide sits centred on the chair, with a 27 inch Gigabyte stood on its end to the left of it. No single mount would carry both, so the ultrawide has its own arm and a second arm hides behind the vertical screen. During the day that screen keeps the chat windows and the git client. At night it keeps Discord. The sound comes out of the ultrawide, sub and all.

Two machines share the desk. A MacBook Pro runs the working day, and a Fractal Torrent under the right end runs the evening. A USB switch moves the keyboard and the mouse between them. The screens change by hand, or the Mac goes to sleep at the end of the day and they follow the computer on their own. The code on the ultrawide is a personal finance app, being rewritten.

The bar over the ultrawide is working light, for soldering and for 3D printing, and not for the screen. Beside it stands a printed shoji lamp, and next to that a charging stand drawn in Fusion 360 to fit a MagSafe battery. A Fukien tea tree has been growing on the right end of the desk for five years. Under the left end hangs a white Xplorer guitar, covered in stickers and still played through Clone Hero.
